When and How to Harvest Mullein

Growing your own mullein is easy, but knowing when to harvest the leaves and flowers is what helps you get the most from your plants.

At Mullein Farm, we believe in keeping things simple: grow it naturally, harvest it at the right time, and handle the plant with care.

Harvesting Mullein Leaves

Mullein leaves can be harvested during the growing season while the plant is actively producing fresh, healthy growth.

Choose leaves that are:

  • Green and healthy
  • Free from disease or damage
  • Fully developed
  • Dry and free of morning dew or rain

For the best quality, harvest leaves on a dry day after the morning moisture has disappeared.

You don't have to strip the entire plant. Harvesting some of the larger leaves while leaving plenty of healthy growth allows the plant to continue developing.

Harvesting Mullein Flowers

Mullein flowers are small, yellow and delicate. They appear on the tall flower stalk as the plant matures.

Flowers are best picked when they are freshly opened and dry.

Because individual flowers open at different times, harvesting is usually done gradually rather than all at once. Check the flower stalk regularly and pick the newly opened flowers.

Harvesting Mullein for Drying

If you are harvesting mullein leaves for tea or other dried preparations, handle them gently.

After harvesting:

  1. Remove damaged or unwanted leaves.
  2. Check carefully for insects or debris.
  3. Do not wash the leaves unless necessary.
  4. Spread the leaves in a clean, dry area with good airflow.
  5. Keep them out of direct sunlight while drying.
  6. Turn or separate the leaves occasionally so moisture can escape.
  7. Make sure the leaves are completely dry before storing.

Properly dried leaves should feel dry and crisp rather than soft or damp.

Why Drying Matters

Fresh plant material contains moisture. If it is stored before it is completely dry, moisture can become trapped and lead to spoilage.

Take your time with the drying process. Good drying is one of the most important steps in preserving harvested mullein.

Harvesting Seeds

If you want to save your own mullein seeds, allow mature flower stalks to remain on the plant.

As the plant finishes flowering, seed capsules develop along the stalk. Allow them to mature and dry before collecting the seeds.

Saving seeds from your own plants can give you a continuing supply for future gardens.

A Simple Mullein Farm Rule

Don't rush the harvest.

Mullein is a hardy plant, and you don't need to take everything at once. Harvest what you need, leave healthy growth on the plant, and let nature continue doing its work.

From the first tiny seedling to a towering flowering plant, growing mullein is part of the fun.

From Our Farm to Your Garden

At Mullein Farm, we're growing, learning and sharing what we discover along the way.

Whether you're growing your first mullein plant or saving seed for another year's garden, harvesting is one more step in the journey.

Grow it. Harvest it. Dry it. Save it. Grow it again.

That's the Mullein Fa
